Il bosco che cambia
Sunday, September 27 - Hike to Cima Durmont with Giorgio Vacchiano, a researcher in forest management and planning
Giorgio Vacchiano is a researcher in forest management and planning at the University of Milan; he studies simulation models to support sustainable forest management, as well as mitigation and adaptation to climate change and natural disturbances in European temperate forests. He is involved in science education and communication, has numerous scientific publications to his credit, and in 2018 was named by Nature magazine as one of the 11 best emerging scientists in the world who 'are making their mark on science.' He is a member of the Italian Society of Silviculture and Forest Ecology (SISEF), where he coordinates the working group on communication, and of the Ecological Society of America (ESA). He is the author of *La resilienza del bosco* (Mondadori, 2019) and president of Climate Media Center Italia.
Description: From Passo Daone, a mountain pass frequented by migratory birds heading south in the fall, we will ascend rapidly along the steep slopes of Cima Durmont.
Once we emerge from the edge of the forest rich in Scots pines, we will reach the summit. Surrounded by alpine meadows, we will observe a contrasting landscape, ranging from heavily developed valleys to wild ones-an ideal environment for various animal species.
Half-day activity
In the afternoon, at 3:00 PM, Giorgio Vacchiano will present a talk in Tione, as part of the Judicaria Ecofestival, titled 'Stories Written in Trees - Resilience and Adaptations of Forests in a Changing Climate'
